Several media outlets, along with Senate, and the FutureGen Alliance websites were praising the July 8th and July 11th votes by the The Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee and Senate Appropriations Committee respectively. In both votes, the Senate chose to protect $134 million in federal funding for the FutureGen plant at Matoon, Il.
In two separate FutureGen Alliance news releases, CEO Michael Mudd applauded the decision as helping to move the world's first near-zero emissions coal plant closer to reality.
Protecting the funding for FutureGen at Mattoon will help keep the project moving forward into next year so that the next presidential administration can decide how to put the project back on the fast track. This action keeps the momentum going in the effort to build the world’s first near-zero emission coal-fueled power plant .
The news releases also noted that the project enjoys international support and that the recent decision by the G8 leaders to invest in 20 carbon sequestration projects around the world demonstrates the worldwide desire and need to move forward with clean coal and carbon sequestration technologies.
