America’s future energy needs are clearly defined. We need more; more reliable energy; more secure energy; more affordable energy. While increased utilization of domestic coal resources offers an obvious solution, coal’s role in our nation’s future energy mix is not assured. In fact, coal use is facing attacks on many fronts.

The daunting challenge of meeting U.S. energy demands cannot be addressed without a committed effort on the part of coal suppliers, transporters, and consumers. Each must ensure that their respective businesses are investing in and maintaining necessary infrastructure and employing qualified personnel, as well as using effective operational and environmental management approaches and best practices.

With a clear understanding of our nation’s future energy needs in hand, the coal industry is now called upon to develop a forward-looking strategy that defines infrastructure capacity requirements, addresses environmental management challenges, and offers realistic policy options for meeting our nation’s future coal-based energy needs in a timely, efficient manner.
