UCGP in conjunction with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Scientific Drilling and NETL is running a one day tutorial ahead of the main 25th International Pittsburgh Coal Conference.
The topics to be covered will include the history and development of UCG, its current status around the world and the advantages it offers as a large-scale energy source. We also plan to cover environmental and regulatory issues, directional drilling of process wells and well construction, coal geology and hydrogeology, site selection, modeling, public perceptions and how to promote UCG and carbon capture and storage. Underground coal gasification has come to the attention of all coal owning countries as a clean coal provider of a versatile syngas and a substantial energy source with the advantage of security of supply, competitive cost, and a capacity for easier carbon capture and sequestration. The purpose of the tutorial is to provide delegates with a general understanding of underground coal gasification and should be on interest to a wide audience.
Cost: $45 includes tutorial, lunch, and break - Please note attendance at IPCC Main Conference is required.

Coal supply, consumer and transportation executives face an overwhelming number of marketplace and public policy challenges. The American Coal Council’s 2008 Coal Market Strategies Conference examines the many and varied dynamics at play in today’s U.S. coal industry and focuses on how coal producers, utilities, railroads, ports and barge operators are addressing the industry’s TOP 10 issues.
- Global Coal Market Dynamics
- Meeting Electric Power Demand
- New Coal Plant Siting & Permitting
- Utility Fuel Flexibility/Switching Considerations
- U.S. Coal Production Challenges: Mine Safety, Permitting & Operational Challenges
- Coal Supply & Price Trends
- Coal Transportation Capacity & Performance: Ocean, Rail, Barge & Port
- Environmental Stewardship
- Enhancing Public Perception of Coal
- Business Opportunities in Emerging Markets: Pre-Combustion, UCG, CTL
Today’s coal industry is subject to increasing scrutiny and unprecedented demands from legislators, environmental groups, shareholders and the general public. Business resources are being stretched thin to address safety, environmental compliance, permitting, technology development, and infrastructure needs. Operations and construction costs are rising in response to unprecedented global demand for labor, steel, petroleum products and engineering services. Supply dynamics are shifting with emerging markets for U.S. exports and the increasing use of scrubbers.
Attendees will benefit from the opportunity to learn about a broad spectrum of the industry’s most pressing issues, including how these factors interact and affect decisions regarding mine and power plant development, fuel sourcing and strategic planning.
